84 of Portage, passed away on April 16, 2023 in Windber. He was born May 4, 1938 in Portage Township. He was the son of John and Mary (Gresh) Schaffranek. Albert was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings: John, Elmer, Martha Popchock and Delores Drinosky. He is survived by his daughters: Tammy, Karen and Carrie. He is also survived by his brother Raymond Schaffranek of VA and numerous nieces and nephews.
Albert served his country in the US Army, where in Germany he was able to meet his father’s relatives. He was a retired employee of US Steel Corporation in Johnstown with 20 years of service and the Johnstown Corporation with 12 years of service. He was a former member of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Portage. Albert was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus and Honorary Life Member of Assembly #954 in Johnstown. He was a Life Member of the VFW Post #895 in Portage and a Life Member of the American Legion Post #430 and the Amvets #150 in Portage. Albert formerly served on the Portage Ritual Team.
He enjoyed country music especially Kitty Wells, Hank Williams and Alan Jackson. He was a lifelong fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Steelers and most recently the Penguins. Albert liked to do gardening around his home and he enjoyed fishing with his brother Raymond. He also liked buying a new truck every year. Albert’s nieces and nephews and their children were very important to him. He looked forward to sending them greeting cards for birthdays and holidays and especially enjoyed hearing from them.
Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM on Wednesday, April 19, 2023 at the Matthew R. Decort Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc. in Portage. Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, April 20, 2023 at 10 AM at Holy Family Catholic Church in Portage, Fr. Thomas Stabile, Celebrant. Committal will be held in St. James Cemetery in Summerhill, PA. Graveside Military Rites by the Portage Ritual Team. On-line condolences may be made at www.decortfh.com.
