Obituary for Arthur L. Huff
Huff, Arthur L., “Art” - 97 of Portage, passed away April 14, 2022 at home with his loved ones by his side. He was born on November 29, 1924 in Beaverun, PA. He was the son of Grover and Lula (Boyles) Huff. Art is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Edna (Custer) Huff and these siblings: George (Thelma Costlow), Donald (Beatrice Marko), Grover (Winifred Osewalt), Pete (Mary Margaret Voice), Charles (Shirley George), Harold (Vicki Zevorich), Alice Homolish (Mike), a brother-in-law: Clarence Debrabant and numerous infant siblings.
Art is survived by his sister Pearl Debrabant of Georgia and his special nephew and niece and caregivers: Raymond and Karen (Husband) Huff of Portage, niece and nephew: Janet (Huff) wife of John Lacko of St. Michael and best friends and niece and nephew: Elroy and Julie Marks of Florida and also numerous nieces and nephews and his feline friend: Boots.
Art started his mining career at the age of 16. He quit school, like many in his generation did back then and went to work in the mines, taking his older brother Charles job, who went to war to serve our Country. He worked for many mines for over 40 years and he retired in 1986 from Bethlehem Mine 32. Art met the love of his life and future wife Edna at her family’s business, Custer’s Restaurant, on Main Street in Portage in 1946. They were united in marriage on June 24, 1948 at the First Lutheran Church in Portage by Reverend George Uhler. Art and Edna enjoyed their time together, especially camping at Raystown back in the day. He was a proud member of the First Lutheran Church in Portage, where he formerly served on council. He was also a member of UMWA Local Union #1368. Art enjoyed casino trips to Rocky Gap, daily poker games with Karen and Ray and in his younger days he was always up for shooting a good game of pool with Ray and his friends and neighbors. He loved watching old Westerns on the television, especially gun smoke and he never missed watching a Pittsburgh Steelers or Pirates game. Most of all, Art was a kind man who made everyone feel important and welcome in his home.
Family will receive friends from 12PM until time of 2PM Service on Monday, April 18, 2022 at the Matthew R. Decort Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc in Portage, Pastor Steve Moore, officiant. Committal will be held in South Fork Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Art’s name to The Portage Area Historical Society, 400 Lee Street, PO Box 45, Portage, PA 15946 and/or Windber Hospice, 600 Somerset Avenue, Windber, PA 15963. On-line condolences may be made at www.decortfh.com.
The Huff Family would like to give a special thank you to Windber Hospice and their staff for the excellent care they had given to Art.
