Obituary for Daniel J. Tremel
Tremel, Daniel J., 69 of Portage, passed away on January 18, 2019 in Pittsburgh. He was born on September 27, 1949 in Johnstown, son of Charles and Ann (Franey) Tremel. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, Dan Pauley. Dan is survived by his loving wife Noreen (Mignogna) Tremel; his daughter, Rebecca, wife of Andrew Poborski of South Fork; his son, Daniel Tremel and wife Patrina of Camp Zama, Japan; and five grandchildren: Zachary, Macie, Sofie, Pulani and Becca.
He is the brother of Charles (Susan) Tremel of Sidman; Patrick (Jaytricia) Tremel of Cassandra; Timothy Tremel (Ann) of Portage; Thomas Tremel (Lori Rand) of Miami, FL: and Mary Pauley of Cassandra. Dan is also survived by his brothers and sisters-in-law: Mary Lynn Novelli of Dallas, TX; Joseph (Theresa) Mignogna of Houston, TX; Tony Mignogna of Cresson; Lisa (Joe) Mink of Austin, TX; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Dan was a U.S. Army Vietnam Veteran. He was a Specialist 4th Class with Charlie Company in the 25th Infantry Division, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Battalion (Mechanized), 22nd Infantry Regiment (Triple Deuce). He participated in the Cambodian Campaign where he was wounded. Dan’s Military Awards include: Bronze Star with a V (for Valor) device and Bronze Oak Leaf; Purple Heart; Army Commendation Medal with V device and Bronze Oak Leaf; National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal; Vietnam Campaign Medal with three stars (three campaigns); Vietnam Gallantry Cross and Combat Infantryman Badge.
Dan retired from SCI Houtzdale where he was a carpenter trade instructor. He was very kind and generous to everyone he met and his sense of humor and quick wit will never be forgotten. Most importantly, Dan was a family man, loving time with his children and grandchildren. He especially enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s events.
Family will receive friends from 2-4 PM and 6-9 PM on Wednesday, January 23rd at the Matthew R. Decort Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc. of Portage. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, January 24th at 10 AM at Holy Family Catholic Church in Portage. Fr. Thomas Stabile, celebrant and Deacon Joseph Mignogna, Concelebrant. Military Honors by the Portage Ritual Team will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church. Committal will be private to the family. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Dan’s name to Holy Family Catholic Church People Helping People Fund, 509 Caldwell Avenue, Portage, PA 15946.
