Obituary for Dixie Lewis
LEWIS - Dixie, 76, Portage, surrounded by her loving family at home, went to be with the Lord Oct. 19, 2013. She was born Aug. 9, 1937, in Portage, daughter of Samuel and Viola (Derrick) Mross. She was preceded in death by her parents, and by her husband, Donald E. Lewis Sr., who passed away April 26, 2011. Dixie is survived by her son, Donald E. Lewis Jr., and wife, Melia, Portage, and her daughter, Tina M. Lewis, Portage. She also is survived by her grandchildren, Donald E. Lewis III; Samantha, wife of Brandon Steach; Derrick Lewis; and Maria Lewis; great-grandchildren, Julianna, Bryce, Anthony, Nicholas, Alex and Rhianna; and her faithful canine companion, Lewis. Dixie was a very extraordinary person. She had a heart of gold and she loved and befriended many. She reached out to all by touching many lives and by showing value to all people she met along the way. Most importantly, she was a loving daughter, wife, mother and grandmother. She always put others first especially her family and friends. She was co-owner and co-founder of Portage Power Wash with her husband, Don. Dixie was an active member of Bethany United Methodist Church, Portage, where she sang in the Gospel Trio and held many offices on committees throughout the years. She was a past president of the Women's Club of Portage and the Portage Public Library. She was a founding member of the Portage Area Ambulance Association, where she served on the board, and she was a former president of the AFLCIO with the Ebensburg Center. Dixie loved her community and she was always there to lend a helping hand. She enjoyed playing pinochle, shopping and meeting up with her former classmates once a month. Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Matthew R. Decort Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc., Portage, and from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bethany United Methodist Church, Portage, Pastor Arlene Bobrowicz and Pastor Maryann Long, officiating.
