Obituary for Donald P. Murray, Sr.
Murray, Donald P. Sr. – 88 of Portage, passed away April 30, 2016 in Portage. He was born October 17, 1927 in Altoona. He was the son of Raymond and Anna (Kent) Murray. He is preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Justin Handel, a son-in-law: Shotsie Bayliss and brothers: Robert, Edward, Bill, Ken, Ray, Joe, Frank and Leo Murray and sisters: Ella Mae, Elizabeth Sheehan, Anna Mae Cehelnik and Betty Farabaugh. Don is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, the former Dorothy “Dot” A. Smith and these children: Kathy wife of Barry Verprauskus of South Fork; Don Murray Jr. and wife Cindy (Reed) of Portage; Debbie Bayliss of Winchester,VA; Linda wife of Greg Handel of Dover, PA; Gary Murray and wife Dara (Gordon) of Germantown, MD; and Becky wife of Bruce Saunders of Oak Hill, VA. Also survived by 17 Grandchildren and 11 Great Grandchildren. Don was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who will be greatly missed. He was an active member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Portage where he formerly served as an usher. He and Dot helped serve the church for many years, by being in charge of special fundraisers such as the 50/50 ticket raffles. Don and his wife are also former recipients of the Ubi Caritas Award at Holy Family Church. He was an Army Air Corp Veteran and he served in the Philippines. Don was a member of the Portage Amvets Post #150, the Portage American Legion Post #430 and the Portage VFW Post #895. In his free time, he enjoyed a good card game of Rummy. Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM on Monday and on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM at the Matthew R. Decort Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc. of Portage, where vigil services will be held that evening at 7 PM Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, at 11 AM at Holy Family Catholic Church in Portage, Fr. Andrew Draper, Celebrant. Committal in St. James Cemetery in Summerhill. Graveside military rites by the Portage Ritual Team.
