Obituary for Dora M. Smith
74, Portage, PA, Loving and adoring wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother went home to be with the Lord on May 18, 2021 after a courageous and hard-fought eight-year battle with Multiple Myeloma. Her strength was immeasurable.

She was born August 16, 1946 in Ehrenfeld, the daughter of Clement “Hook” and Reba (Crum) Kick. Preceded in death by infant daughter, Paula Marie, her father, mother (her “best friend in the world”), brother Clement, Jr., Robert “Bob”, John “Jack” and Donald. Survived by loving husband of 57 years C. Paul Smith, who loved and cared for her completely and unconditionally, her loving daughter, Brenda, wife of Marty Kerch, (Portage), her loving son Paul Andrew and wife Missy (Windber); beloved grandchildren Krista (Casey) Leman, Pittsburgh; Kelli (Daniel) Robine, Lilly; and step-grandchild, Jill Haberkorn; great grandchildren Evangeline Leman, Locklyn and Colton Robine, and her grand fur babies that she often watched Zoe, Barkley, Ollie, Remi and Jaxon. Sister of Patricia “Pat” Minor, Portage; Thomas “Lee” Kick and wife Shirley and Betty Bieniewicz, both of Michigan. Also survived by sisters-in-law Mary Domidica and Joanne Kleman (her buddy); brothers-in-law Robert Smith and Joseph Smith, all of South Fork. There are numerous nieces, nephews and friends whom she dearly loved.

Dora lived a full life as a wonderful mother and homemaker. She worked in the Portage Antmart Sewing Factory and, to this day, could sew a button and hem a pant line in a blink of an eye. She was a spirited individual who made the most delicious apple pies, always made an abundance of food for every family function and provided arms of comfort and tranquility for her great grandchildren. She enjoyed lucky trips to the casino, events at the Jennerstown Speedway, bus trips with the “ladies”, traveling to Lancaster, beach vacations and scenic drives in the car with her husband, Paul. You could count on her for a jar of canned red beets, vegetables from her garden and great company while camping at Raystown lake. She loved to cook, play poker and pinochle with family, crochet, and solve Sudoku puzzles. She also loved watching the Game Show Network and the Hallmark Channel in the evenings. On many occasions, you could find her out and about on lunch dates with her sister Pat or with one of her many friends. She was a Member of First Lutheran Church, Portage and Women’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (WELCA).

Dora was compassionate, honest, loving, and always a phone call away. The door to her home was always open. She was a beautiful and caring friend to all the lives she touched. Most of all, she loved her family and they were her greatest joy. She will be incredibly and undoubtedly missed by all from this moment on.
Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 21st, at Matthew R. Decort Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., Portage. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, at First Lutheran Church, Portage; Pastor Mark Fischer, celebrant. Committal, Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Johnstown.
Paul and the family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Ibrahim Sbeitan and staff, especially Jen, at Conemaugh Health System, Dr. Rafic Farah and staff at the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, Shadyside Hospital and their staff, Sue Berardinelli and the staff at Portage Health Center and Windber Hospice nurses Jayme, Tiffany, Michael and Melanie for their compassion and care.

The family suggests memorial donations to UPMC Mario Lemieux Center for Blood Cancers, 5115 Centre Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15232. Due to Covid-19, the practice of mask wearing and social distancing is mandatory at First Lutheran Church and the Funeral Home.

“But your eyes were looking forward to that place beyond the sky where Jesus held his outstretched arms. It was time to say good-bye”. She will forever be loved, cherished and missed beyond words. Until we meet again.
