Obituary for Dorothy A. Murray
Dorothy A. “Dot” Murray – 87 of Portage, passed away October 15, 2018 in Johnstown. She was born on August 27, 1931 in Cresson. Dorothy was the daughter of Vincent and Regina (McConnell) Smith. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Donald P. Murray, Sr., grandson: Justin Handel and son-in-law: Shotsie Bayliss and her siblings: Audrey Ceneskie, Garry Smith, Lydia Smith and Sylvia Weymer.
Dorothy is survived by her loving children: Kathy wife of Barry Verprauskus of South Fork; Don Murray Jr. and wife Cindy (Reed) of Portage; Debbie Bayliss of Winchester,VA; Linda wife of Greg Handel of Dover, PA; Gary Murray and wife Dara (Gordon) of Germantown, MD; and Becky wife of Bruce Saunders of Hamilton, VA. Dot is also survived by 17 Grandchildren and 15 Great Grandchildren.
She was the sister of Walter Smith and wife Barbara of Mineral Point, Lois wife of Jim Mullen of Nanty Glo, Evelyn wife of Robert Heid of Patton, Myrtle Haines of Portage, Russell Smith and wife Jane of Elizabeth, Richard Smith and wife Nancy of Dilltown, Duane Smith and wife Jeanne of OH , Cliff Smith and wife Deborah of OH, Carol wife of Craig Burkey of Danville, ,Gerald Smith and wife Kamra of WA and Ed Smith and wife Jeanette of CA. She was a loving mother and grandmother that will be greatly missed.
Dot was a former employee for Penn State Cambria County Cooperative Extension Agency, where she was employed as a nutritional aide. She was also a former seamstress. She was an active member of Holy Family Catholic Church, where she formerly taught CCD and served as a former member of the Church Council. Dot and her husband Don were also former recipients of the Ubi Caritas Award at Holy Family Church. She also served for many years in the Stephen Ministry as a Lay Minister in the local hospitals and as a foster grandmother for the Portage Area School District.
Family will receive friends from 3 to 8 PM on Thursday, October 18th at the Matthew R. Decort Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc. of Portage. Mass will be held on Friday, October 19th at 10 AM at Holy Family Catholic Church in Portage, Fr. Thomas Stabile, Celebrant. Committal in St. James Cemetery in Summerhill.
