Obituary for Dr. John S. Karduck
Karduck, Dr. John S. - 72 of Portage, passed away July 1, 2022 in Pittsburgh, with his family at his side. Son of John and Margaret (Petrunak) Karduck, he was born on December 26, 1949 in Johnstown. He is preceded in death by his parents. John is survived by his brother Martin Karduck and wife Shirley (Weakland) of Boalsburg and his nephews: Daniel Karduck and wife Laura (Verne) of Harrisburg, Scott Karduck and Fiance’ Dr. Meghan McDoniel of State College and Lieutenant Craig Karduck and wife Lauren (Tramontano) of Kingsville, TX.

John was class president at Portage Area High School, where he graduated in 1967. He continued his academics at The University of Pittsburgh and Pitt Medical School, where earned his medical degree in 1975. He started his own private practice in Portage, where he served the community as a primary care physician for decades. Later in his career, he was an ER physician at hospitals throughout the region. Most recently he was a faculty member at St. Francis University where he taught in the Department of Physician Assistant Science.

Professionally John had two great passions: medicine and teaching. Early in his career he was instrumental in establishing the paramedic program in our region. The very first paramedic class proved the value of the program by saving lives in the devastating 1977 Johnstown Flood. John remained active in the first response system for decades through various roles, becoming the medical director of the Portage Area Ambulance Association, charter member of the National Association of EMS Educators, Chairman of the PA chapter of the American Heart Association, instructor of BLS, PALS, ACLS. At one time, he was an active medical director of over 30 EMS throughout several counties and the list goes on.

In his personal life, John loved the arts and theater. He enjoyed music and literature. He supported his community through his various philanthropic giving. Of his greatest loves were his nephews, Daniel, Scott, and Craig and all of his students.

Family will receive friends from 2 to 8 PM on Wednesday, July 6, 2022 at the Matthew R. Decort Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc in Portage.
