Obituary for Edward W. Layo
Layo, Edward W. – 93 of Portage, passed away on August 23, 2019 in Portage. He was born on November 28, 1925 in Portage. He is preceded in death by his parents John and Anna (Scislowicz) Layo, loving wife of 63 years, Marilyn (Miller) Layo, daughter-in-law: Linda Layo and all his siblings: Mary Layo (infant), Frank, John, Joseph, Louise Malopy, Marie Dispennett, Anna Janik, Fred, Helene Rys, Stella Grecek and Henry.
He is survived by his children: Pam Ellis of Portage; Bill Layo of Clarks Summit, PA; Rick Layo, wife Kathy (McHenry) of Allison Park, PA and Ed Layo, wife Frances (Franey) of Gaithersburg, MD. Edward is also survived by his grandchildren: Jennifer Burda (Jim), Amanda Ellis, Bill Layo, Ray Layo (Adrienne), Lisa Beebe (Meade), Brandon Layo (Lindsey), Dan, Samantha and Derek Layo. He is also survived by his step-grandchildren: Frank, Scott and Marc Pagnotti and his great grandchildren: Jordan, Taylor, Jeremy, Cole, Colin, Kendall, Sloane, Mila, Scarlett and Olivia.
Edward was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy and he served his Country in World War II in the Pacific Theater. He received his Bachelors of Arts Degree from St. Francis University and his Masters in Education from Gannon University. He was a former educator and coach with the Portage Area School District, where he touched countless lives both in the classroom and on the field. Edward was a former PIAA official for multiple sports for 48 years before retiring in 2006. He loved playing and watching all sports and he was very proud of his hole in one at Maple Crest golf course. He was also a former semi pro football player for 9 years with the Portage Bulldogs.
Family will receive friends from 4 to 8 PM on Wednesday, August 28th, 2019 at the Matthew R. Decort Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc. of Portage. Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, August 29th, 2019 at 10 AM at Holy Family Catholic Church in Portage, officiated by Fr. Tom Stabile, where Military Rites will be held by the Portage Ritual Team. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
