Obituary for Elizabeth Ann Silagyi
SILAGYI - Elizabeth Ann Kovach, 94, formerly of Portage, died June 23, 2013 at her home in Montgomery Village, Maryland. Born May 28, 1919, in Cassandra, Pennsylvania, daughter of Dennis and Anna (Domonkas) Kovach. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene, parents, brothers (Joseph and Dennis), and son-in-law, Dr. Anthony Szymkowiak. She is survived by children, Mary Ann Szymkowiak, Gaithersburg, MD.; Michael, Heathsville, VA.; E. Jean (Rick) Rebovich, Charlotte, NC; and Irene (Fred) Close, Sierra Vista, AZ.; grandchildren, Jason Szymkowiak (Patricia Garong); Carrie Szymkowiak Sewell (Anthony); Andrew Silagyi (Barbara Shuler); Rachel Silagyi (Rick Seguinot); Nicholas Rebovich (Courtney Parrish); Mary Rebovich Guerra (William); and Stephanie Close Donovan (Cody); great-grandchildren, Avianna and Tonibella Szymkowiak, Whembley, Jinayah, Elisha, and Kaeleigh Sewell, Owen Silagyi, and Kori Bella Rebovich. Sister of Rosella Glander, sisters-in-law, Helen Silagyi, Florence Kovach, and Betty Ann Kovach, and cherished nieces, nephews, and cousins. Elizabeth graduated from Portage High School in 1937 where she played saxophone in the high school band. She became a Registered Nurse following her graduation from the New York City Bellevue Hospital School of Nursing. Elizabeth was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who prayed the rosary daily, trusted in God, and loved to read, make quilts, and create oil paintings. During her 63 year marriage to Eugene, they enjoyed dancing, attending musical theatre, and traveling through Europe and the U.S.A. to visit family. Elizabeth valued the warm welcome from her church family at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Parish (Portage) and the kindnesses extended to her and Eugene by Father Walter Moll (pastor of St. Joseph Parish, Portage, Pa.), and Father Ron Osinski (former pastor of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Parish). In Maryland, Elizabeth attended Mass at St. John Neumann Catholic Church. In her final years, Elizabeth was blessed with access to Lutheran, Episcopal, Methodist and Catholic lay- ministers, who visited her senior living community in Montgomery Village and provided Bible studies, and prayer services. She found great comfort from the St. John Neumann Catholic Church priests and Eucharistic ministers who brought the sacraments to her, and from attending daily Mass televised on EWTN. Prior to joining Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Parish, Elizabeth was an active member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Portage, donating her time and talents for more than sixty years to the Hungarian church her father helped build. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM, Thursday, at the Matthew R. Decort Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc, Portage, where a rosary for the deceased will be held that evening at 7PM. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30 AM on Friday at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Parish, Hammer Street, Portage, Fr. Andrew Draper, celebrant. Committal is at St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Portage. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Portage Public Library (704 Main St, Portage, PA 15946), the Sisters of Mercy (P.O.
