Obituary for Florence May Helsel
Helsel, Florence, May - 90 of Portage, passed away on September 4, 2017 at home, surrounded by her loving family. Florence was born on March 10, 1927 in Ehrenfeld. She was the daughter of Fred and Sophia (Moxim) Schaffranek. She is preceded in death by her parents and her brother Fred “Junior” Schaffranek.
Florence is survived by her loving daughter, Gail Stancovich of Portage, her grandsons: Joseph Stancovich and wife Kelli (Bouch) and Mark Stancovich and wife Stephanie (Abbotts) all of Portage and grandchildren: Kendall, Kolton, Macy and Ava. She is also survived by her siblings: Victor Schaffranek, Carol Hopper and Debbie wife of Bill Cooper, all of Portage and her son-in-law: Joseph R. Stancovich of Portage.
Florence was an active member of the First Lutheran Church in Portage, where she was a devotional person and a member of WELCA and helped with many church dinners and functions. As part of her ministry, Flo made prayer squares that she would pass along to church family and friends. She is best remembered for asking for prayers and handing them out prior to Sunday Services. She enjoyed quilting, and crocheting isolette covers to protect premature babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Units at the local hospitals. She will also be remembered for her devotion and friendship to the neighborhood cats. Most importantly Flo was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend to those whom she met along the way in life. She enjoyed baking and recently was able to make her famous No-Bake Cookies or what her family likes to call Flo-Bakes. At Flo’s request there will be no viewing.
Family will receive friends from 10 AM until the 11 AM Memorial Service at First Lutheran Church in Portage, on Friday, Pastor Walter Startzel, officiant. Inurnment will be private to the family.
