Obituary for Frances K. Layo
Layo, Frances K., 60 passed away on October 6, 2024 at home with her husband by her side after a courageous 13 year battle with cancer. Fran was a dedicated, loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was born on June 19, 1964 in Altoona. Fran, formally of Portage, lived in Gaithersburg, MD with her husband Edward Layo. Fran and Edward just celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on September 22nd. She is survived by her son Brandon Layo and daughter-in-law Lindsey (Shives) Layo and grandchildren Scarlett, Olivia, Owen, and Caroline of Keedysville, MD. She is proceeded in death by her parents, Jacob and Kathryn (Mattias) Franey and her brother, Joseph Franey. She is survived by her sisters Catherine (Nicholas) Vrabel of Altoona, and Ann (Joseph) Cannonie, and sister-in- law Cathy (Hunt) Franey of Portage. She is also survived by her sister and brothers-in-law: Pamela Ellis of Portage, William “Butch” Layo of Clarks Summit and Richard (Kathy) Layo of Allison Park and 19 nieces and nephews. Prior to retirement, Fran, was a Human Resource Manager for a medical practice in Rockville, MD. She most enjoyed spending time with her four grandchildren, going to the beach, and camping. She enjoyed watching classic black and white movies, cooking and baking. She was known for her delicious peanut butter fudge by all the extended family members. She was a kind and loving person that touched all of the people she encountered throughout her life. Family and Friends will be received from 6 to 8 PM on Thursday, October 10th, 2024 at the Matthew R. Decort Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc. in Portage. Funeral Mass will be held at 11 AM on Friday, October 11th, 2024 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Portage, Fr. Thomas Stabile, Celebrant. Committal in St. Mary Cemetery in Portage. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in Fran’s name to the Carmelite Monastery of Saint Therese of Lisieux, 2101 Manor Drive, Loretto, PA 15940.
