Obituary for Francis A. Sopata
80 of Portage, passed away on December 6, 2021 in Johnstown. He was born on November 9, 1941 in Johnstown. He was the son of Mary (Gruse) and Joseph Sopata. Foozie is preceded in death by his parents and his infant daughter Catherine Marie. He is survived by his loving wife: Patricia (Miller) Sopata and their sons: Joseph Sopata and wife Brenda of Severn, MD and David Sopata and wife Shannon of Laurel, MD. He is also survived by his grandson: Michael Sopata of Odenton, MD and a sister: Darlene Penrod of MD and extended family and friends.
He was a retired Metropolitan Police Officer in Washington, DC. He was very proud that his sons Joseph and David followed in his footsteps. He was the owner and operator of Allegheny Kitchens in Portage. Foozie was an avid hunter and fisherman and he enjoyed spending time at his camp in Sinnamahoning, PA. He was a lifetime member of the Jamestown Rod and Gun Club and he served as a past president of the Jamestown PNA #1068 for over 40 years. He was also a 3rd Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus. Foozie enjoyed spending winters in Florida with his wife, Patti.
Foozie’s proudest accomplishments in his careers were working for and becoming personal friends with the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, installing the kitchen at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and standing guard in the Capitol Rotunda for President John F. Kennedy as he lay in state.
Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM on Friday, December 10, 2021 at the Matthew R. Decort Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc. in Portage. Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, December 11, 2021 at 10 AM at Holy Family Catholic Church in Portage. Fr. Kevin Queally. Committal will be held in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Portage.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Cambria County Humane Society, 743 Galleria Drive Ext., Johnstown, PA 15904 and/or the DC Police Memorial & Museum, 300 Indiana Avenue NW Room 4067, Washington, DC 20001.
