Obituary for George Novotny
NOVOTNY - George E., 78, Summerhill, passed away on February 26, 2015 at home surrounded by his wife and family. Born September 21, 1936 in Portage, son of Joseph and Mary (Hannakan) Novotny. Preceded in death by his parents, sisters Mary (Ralph) George, Julie (Steve) Nagy, Genn (James) Shaw, Dorothy (Joseph) Kuzeck; brothers-in-law Donald Strayer, Roy Green, Charles (Butch) Brewer and wife Arlene; nephews Bob and Rick Casciotti, Donney Smith, Jack Shaw; nieces Jennifer Smith and Cherri McKendree. Survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Bonnie (Brewer), children Terri, wife of James Washko, Allen, wife Dianne (George) and Joni, wife of Sean Trovato, all of Summerhill; grandchildren Matthew Washko, Florida, Alexis Novotny and Michael Trovato, both of Summerhill. George is also survived by sister's Ann Kordish, Joan (Tom) Wilwohl both of Portage; Jean Smay of Pittsburgh; very special niece Kelly Penatzer and family, and numerous nieces and nephews. George proudly served his country in the United States Army and Army National Guard. He was a member and Council President at St. John Lutheran Church, Summerhill. He was also a Summerhill Borough Council President, Forest Hills Area Ambulance board member, Forest Hills Regional Alliance board member & past chairman, a former board member of the Cambria County Redevelopment Authority, Laurel Municipal Inspection Agency member, Past Commander of the American Legion, Post 430, Member of the St. Michael American Legion, Post 551, Member of the Masonic Summit Lodge 312, and a Life Member and Past Assistant Chief of Portage Volunteer Fire Company. He worked as a local miner and body shop manager. He enjoyed travelling with his family, casino trips, coaching baseball and softball, and was an avid Penn State fan. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Matthew R. Decort Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc. of Portage. Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at St. John Lutheran Church, Summerhill, Pastor Walter Startzel, officiant. Committal in South Fork Cemetery. The family requests that donations may be made in George's name to the community he loved c/o Summerhill Borough Recreation Association, PO Box 199, Summerhill, PA 15958.
