Obituary for George R. Ferraro
92, of Portage, PA passed away on a beautiful Indian Summer day on November 10, 2020 at the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home in Hollidaysburg, PA. He was born on June 18, 1928. George was the son of Clement and Angeline Ferraro. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Julia, son George R. Ferraro Jr., sisters Rose Wozniak, Madeline Jubina, and brothers Amato, Anthony, and his identical twin brother James Michael and special family friend Joseph Marco. George is survived by his daughter Deborah Shope (Daniel) and grandchildren; Benjamin Shope (Elizabeth), Breanna Layo (Deven), and Brian Shope (Anna). He is survived by his beloved great-grandson Bode Daniel Layo and his soon-to-be-born great-grandson Roland Joseph Shope. He is also survived by his brother Louis Ferraro (Mary) and sister Louise Collins, all of Ohio, and several nieces and nephews. Pap loved spending time with Bode playing catch and hide and go seek. He was very excited to meet baby Roland. George served as a Seaman First Class in the United States Navy stationed on the U.S.S. Anderson during World War II. He retired as Plant Manager from the former K&B Sportswear. After his retirement, he drove for Blue and White Bus Lines, traveling to many cities and states across the country. His most memorable job was driving bus for the Portage Area School District. Nothing was more important than attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and this job provided him the opportunity to be more involved in not only their careers, but the careers of many other local student athletes. He was one of the Portage Mustang’s biggest fans. He coached and umpired for many years with the Portage Little League. George was a former Commander of the Portage VFW and a member of the American Legion. His hobbies included bowling and golfing with his brother Jim. All services will be private to the family. A special thank you to the staff at Hollidaysburg Veterans Home who treated George with kindness and compassion during his time there. Over the years they became more than just caretakers but friends and confidantes. The Ferraro and Shope Families are being served by the Matthew R. Decort Funeral Home Inc. of Portage. On-line condolences may be made at www.decortfh.com. To all those who knew George; the next time you raise a glass of beer, think of him.
