Obituary for James A. DeMatteis
84 of Portage, went to be with the Lord on August 31, 2018, surrounded by his loving family at home. He was born on June 8, 1934 in Portage. The son of Carmine and Bridget (Natale) DeMatteis. He is preceded death by his parents, his wife: Shirley (Sargo) DeMatteis and his sisters: Nicolena "Lena" Kish and Marie “Betsy” Bowman.
Jim is survived by his children: James “Jock” DeMatteis and wife Joann (Kovach) of Portage, Carmine DeMatteis and wife Rhonda (Moyer) of Richland, Kathy wife of Gerald Weakland of Lilly, Anthony DeMatteis and wife Kelly (Patterson) of Portage and Eric DeMatteis of Portage. He is also survived by his 12 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren and his faithful canine companions: Jasmine and Jerico and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He is the brother of Carmella Martynuska of Lilly, Michael DeMatteis and wife Beverly of Ohio and Patricia wife of William Huber of Williamsport, PA. Jim enjoyed talking to friends and family, humming and listening to polkas. He loved Manischewitz wine, and snacking on cherry pie and gorgonzola cheese. He especially liked to talk about and work on cars with his sons
Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM on Monday at the Matthew R. Decort Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc. of Portage. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 AM on Tuesday, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Portage, Fr. Thomas Stabile, Celebrant. Committal in St. Bartholomew Church Cemetery in Wilmore.
