Obituary for James Gardner
Gardner, James S. - 89 of Portage. Passed away May 2, 2012 at Cambria Care Center in Ebensburg. Born July 22, 1922 in Bedford. The son of the late David Richard and Ethel Mae (Keller) Gardner. Preceeded in death by parents, wife of 60 years: Audrey "Betty" (Smith) Gardner and these siblings: Fred and Stanley Gardner, Mary Margaret Morgan, Joyce Shull and Carol Myers. Survived by loving daughters: Patricia and fianc�e Marty Passick of Portage and Mary Jo wife of John Petrunak, Jr., of Portage. Also survived by brother Harry Gardner and wife Joanne of Nevada and sister-in-law: Beatrice Gardner of Bedford and numerous nieces and nephews. A Bedford Area High School graduate. Jim was a WWII Veteran, a member of the "Greatest Generation" serving in the Army Air Corp. He was a former self employed house painter and formerly a painter for Bethlehem Steel Corp where he worked in the car shop. Jim was a former member of the Bedford United Methodist Church and he was currently in attendance at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Portage where he served on the administrative board and he was a former chairman on the board of trustees. He was a member of the Portage Area Historical Society and a former forest fire warden with over fifty years of service for the Gallitzin District. Jim especial loved a good game of golf. He was a member of 3 leagues and he played in the Tuesday and Thursday Night Senior Leagues at Maple Crest Golf Course. Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM on Friday and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM on Saturday at the Matthew R. Decort Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Portage where funeral services will be held at 1:00PM on Sunday, Pastor Michael Long and Pastor Bill Hazlett, co-officiating . Committal in Prospect Cemetery in Portage. Graveside military rites by the Portage Volunteer Veterans Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in Jims name to the Portage Area Ambulance Association or the Trinity United Methodist Church of Portage.
