Obituary for John K. Bertuzzi
John K. – 79 of Portage, passed away on September 17, 2017 in Johnstown. He was born on June 24, 1938 in Homer City. The son of Margaret (Bell) Greenawalt and John Bertuzzi. He is preceded in death by his parents, and his brother Howard Hess.
John is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Anita M. (Grigoletto), whom he married on June 8, 1963. He was the proud, father of Michael Bertuzzi and his wife Beth of Meyersdale; Dianne wife of John Lamertina of Mechanicsburg and Maria Strosnider of St. Michael. Nonno was a very proud grandfather of Eden and Erin Bertuzzi, Jacob and Michael Bryja, Emily Boast and Isabella Strosnider. John is also survived by his son-in-law: William of Portage, his brother-in-law: Ronald Grigoletto and wife Judy of New Jersey; and sister-in-laws: Bruna Kissell of Portage and Carol Hess of Indiana and numerous nieces and nephews.
John was a gentle giant and a very giving person who loved life and people. He was a well known wine maker for over 68 years. He enjoyed teaching others his skills and making and giving wine to many, in fact he gave more wine away than he ever drank. John received many awards over the years for his wine. He was an advocate of Gospel Music, he and Anita would attend many concerts. He proudly served his country as a sharp shooter and missile man in the United States Army. John was a member of Holy Family Church and the Portage American Legion Post # 430. He retired as a welder from Penelec with over 28 years of service.
Most importantly John was a family man. He enjoyed his grandchildren tremendously especially attending their sporting events and dance recitals. The greatest pride and joy, to John, was brought to him by his grandchildren. He was dedicated to his family and he was instrumental in being an active part in helping his grandchildren grow into the young adults they are today. John was tirelessly, dedicated to the Portage Area Youth Association. He worked on repairing the Little League, Softball and T-ball fields, the bleachers and concession stand and he even helped to repair the electric to the Little League Field scoreboard.
John believed in helping others, that his wishes were to donate his body to the Humitary Gifts Registry, through the University of Pittsburgh, School of Medicine, for research and education. A memorial service, celebrating John’s life will be held on Sunday, October 15th at 2PM at Holy Family Catholic Church in Portage, Fr. Robert Hilz, T.O.R.
