Obituary for John M. Gressick, Sr.
Gressick, John M ., Sr. – 60 of Portage. Passed away September 27, 2017 at home, after a courageous 4 year battle with pancreatic cancer that metastasized to the brain. He was born on July 12, 1957 in Altoona. The son of Paul V., Sr. and Ethel “Tillie” (Freidhof) Gressick. He is preceded in death by his son Steven P. Gressick, mother Ethel, brother Leo Gressick, Sr. and nephew Perry Eckenrode.
John is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 38 years, Julia (Lee) Gressick. He was the proud father of Jennifer wife of Edward J. Kertes of Portage, John Gressick, Jr. and wife Melissa (Skupaka) of Ebensburg and Leanne wife of Joshua Korin of South Fork. John was also blest with 12 grandchildren: Zachary and Jude Kertes, Nathan, Jacob, Kaitlyn and Emily Gressick and Alexa, Thomas, John, Sophia, Olivia, and Baby Boy Korin, his siblings: Paul Gressick, Jr. and wife Bonnie (Shrift), Mary Jane Gressick, Carol wife of Melvin Lee, Jr., Alice wife of Joe Lee and sister-in-law: Karen Gressick all of Portage, his mother and father-in-law: Melvin Sr.and Frances Lee of Portage and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
John was a 1975 graduate of Portage Area High School and Admiral Peary Vo-tech. During his senior year, he competed in the VICA Competition for brick laying in Madrid, Spain. He was lastly employed by Kukurin Contracting of Export. John loved spending time with his whole family at Cape Hatteras, NC, taking weekend camping trips and especially “adventure trips” with his grandchildren. Making memories was most important to John.
Family will receive friends from 2 to 8 PM on Sunday at the Matthew R. Decort Funeral Home Inc. of Portage. Funeral Mass will be held on Monday at 10AM at Holy Family Catholic Church in Portage, Fr. Andrew Draper, T.O.R., celebrant. Committal in St. Bartholomew Church Cemetery in Wilmore.
