Obituary for Joseph R. Duffy
Duffy, Joseph R. “Doc” - 97 of Portage, passed away on November 18, 2018. He was born on July 28, 1921 in Johnstown. The son of John “J.C.” and Catherine (Kirby) Duffy.
Joseph is survived by his daughter, Barbara wife of Robert Antesberger of Portage and his son, Michael and wife Lorrie (Otto) Duffy of Portage. He will be sadly missed by his grandchildren, Tamara and husband Garrick Kruis, Altoona; Heather and husband Ross Miller, Enola; Kahlie Miller and Brad Schario, Johnstown; and Melanie Duffy and Fiance’ Tyler Engel of Virginia. He is also survived by great grandchildren, nephews, nieces and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife: Mary Louise (Madigan) Duffy, whom he married on May 8, 1946. They were married for 61 years. He is also preceded in death by a son: Dr. Patrick Duffy and brothers: Edward (Virginia), John (Viola), Robert (Mabel), Francis (Claire), Dora Kraft Duffy and brother-in-law: Joseph Madigan (Violet) and other beloved family members.
Mr. Duffy proudly served his Country in World War II as a Master Sergeant in the United States Army. He served in a Signal Company where he was in charge of a maintenance and repair shop for radios and electronic equipment on the bombers in combat. After returning home from serving his Country in World War II, Mr. Duffy opened Duffy Radio Sales and Repair Shop on Caldwell Avenue in Portage. He moved the shop to 631 Main Street, where he repaired radios until a “new version of radio” called the television was invented. Joseph was proud to be the first person in the mainline area to have a television set. Mr. Duffy was best known in the area for the personal care he gave to his customers as the owner of Duffy Television Sales and Service.
He was a loving and caring person. He enjoyed fishing and being with his family and will forever be remembered for bringing joy to them. Joseph was a member of the former St. Joseph Catholic Church in Portage where he was a devoted member of the nocturnal adoration society.
Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM on Tuesday at the Matthew R. Decort Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc. of Portage. Funeral Mass will be held at 1 PM on Wednesday at Holy Family Catholic Church in Portage, Fr. Thomas Stabile, Celebrant. Committal in St. Bartholomew Church Cemetery in Wilmore. Flowers are welcome and/or donations may be made in Joseph’s name to the Portage Area Ambulance Association or to Windber Hospice.
