Obituary for Joyce V. Simmons
Simmons, Joyce V. 84 of Portage, passed away on March 31, 2022 in Windber. She was born on December 4, 1937 in Portage Township. Joyce was the daughter of Louis and Estella (Kause) Vasas. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband: James Simmons, Jr. her son: Rick Simmons and her daughter: Cheryl Simmons. She is also preceded in death by her siblings: Donna Vasas and John, Louis, Jr. and Joseph Vasas. Joyce is survived by her children: Rob Simmons and wife Leona of Portage; Melanie wife of Jim Beddall of Levittown; Dana Simmons of Portage and Michelle Simmons and companion Tracie of Glendale. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Nichole Simmons, Jessica Simmons, both of Portage, Ashli wife of Josh Plummer of Ebensburg, Jennifer Beddall of Philadelphia, Katelyn wife of Kevin Frain of Levittown, Courtney Simmons of Portage, Carissa wife of Brian Thomas of Johnstown and Chance Simmons of Portage and her great grandchildren: Koban, Levi, Kolton, Kennedy, Jamison and Kenna. She was the sister of Randy Vasas and wife Mary of Portage. Joyce was retired from the PA Department of Human Services with over 33 years of service as a Residential Service Worker. She loved construction and remodeling and being able to do so to help anyone in need. She enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting. Along with her husband Jim, Joyce and he were active for many years helping the Portage Area Youth Association and Little League. She was an active member of Martindale Alliance Church, where she enjoyed helping with any and all construction projects. Family will receive friends from 2 to 8 PM on Sunday, April 3, 2022 at the Matthew R. Decort Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc. in Portage and from 10 AM until time of 11 AM service on Monday, April 4, 2022 at the Martindale Alliance Church. Committal will be held at Mount Moriah Cemetery in Blue Knob. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Joyce’s name to the American Diabetes Association, 1400 16th Street NW #410, Washington, DC 20036 and/or Windber Hospice, 600 Somerset Avenue, Windber, PA 15963.
