Obituary for Mark A. Castel, Sr.

Castel, Mark A., Sr. – 65 of Portage, passed away on February 12, 2023 in Johnstown. He was born on October 3, 1957 in Johnstown. The son of Theodore Castel Sr. and Marie (Sendzik) Storey. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife: Sally Jo (Minor) Castel, sister: Lori Castel and his father-in-law: Charles “Steve” Minor. Mark is survived by his sons: Mark A. Castel Jr. and his wife Brandy (Weakland) and Craig A. Castel and his wife Kelly (Regan) and his grandchildren: Erik, Sydney, Lyndsey and Cole Castel all of Portage.


He was the brother of Theodora “Cookie” wife of Joseph Silva, of Portage, Adonna wife of Greg Heming of New Florence, Tracey wife of Robert Nadolsky of Portage, Theodore Castel, Jr. and wife Elizabeth (Fox) of Ebensburg, Matthew Castel and wife Kim (Robine) of Port Matilda, sister and goddaughter, Christine wife of Donald Goughnour of Portage, Casey Castel and wife Christi (Goral) of Portage and Robert Castel and wife Christy (King) of Portage. Mark is also survived by his mother-in-law: Patricia “Pat” Minor, brother-in-law: Charles Minor, niece and goddaughter: Paige Minor and fiance' John Branick and great nephews: Braydon and Mason, all of Portage and his stepmother: Lorraine (Earnest) Castel of Portage and many nieces, nephews and cousins.


Mark was a very caring and fun person. He enjoyed gardening, was an avid sports fan and a first-generation Camaro enthusiast. He was always willing to lend a helping hand wherever and whenever he was needed. He was always smiling and had something witty to say to cheer you up. Family and neighbors always enjoyed his cooking and baking. Mark enjoyed his time in the outdoors, fishing and hunting and passing his knowledge on to others. He was an employee of Altoona Soft Water Inc. Mark was a Freemason and a member of the Summit Lodge 312 in Ebensburg and a member of the Jaffa Provost Guard. 


Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM on Tuesday, February 14, 2023 and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM on Wednesday, February 15, 2023 at the Matthew R. Decort Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc in Portage. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 AM on Thursday, February 16, 2023 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Portage, Fr. Thomas Stabile, Celebrant. Committal in St. Mary Cemetery in Portage. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Mark’s name to: The Jaffa Shrine, 2200 Broad Avenue, Altoona, PA 16601, The Masonic Summit Lodge 312, 755 Rubisch Road, Ebensburg, PA 15931 and/or The American Cancer Society, PO Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741.
