Lutz, Michael Jr. (Mick) – age 92 of Portage, passed away peacefully at home on September 12, 2024. He was born September 15, 1931, in Sonman, Portage Township. He is the son of Michael and Anna (Vargo) Lutz. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Robert, his granddaughter, Melissa Cordek, and the love of his life, Mary Ellen (Kuntz) Lutz, his wife of 63 years.
Mick is survived by his children: Paul Lutz and wife Annette (Koenigsberg) of Portage; Nancy, wife of Dave Peffer of Greensburg; Suzanne, wife of Frank Gall of Greensburg; Michael Lutz and wife Jill (Dubovecky) of Harrisburg, NC. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and his sister, Rose Marie Harnish of York, PA.
Growing up, Mick was a Boy Scout and then served his country by enlisting in the Army. He fought in the Korean War with the U.S. Army, 224 Infantry Regiment at the Punchbowl and Sandbag Castle, and he achieved a rank of Sergeant First Class.
Mick was an ambitious leader who loved being in charge. Mick worked side-by-side with the love of his life, his wife Mary Ellen, to start several successful local businesses, including Lutz Construction Company, Lutz Home Center, and Lutz Realty Company. In his spare time, Mick loved being with his family. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, gardening, family beach vacations to Ocean City and the Outer Banks, trips to Florida, and watching Penn State football games.
Family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, from 2 to 4 PM and 6 to 8 PM at the Matthew R. Decort Funeral Home Inc. of Portage. Funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, September 18, 2024 at 11 AM at Holy Family Catholic Church in Portage, Fr. Thomas Stabile, Celebrant. Entombment in Sacred Heart Mausoleum in Portage.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mick’s name to the ALS Association, 1300 Wilson Boulevard, Suite 600, Arlington, VA 22209 in memory of his granddaughter Melissa Cordek.
