Obituary for Reno J. Tavernini
Reno Tavernini – 86 of Portage, passed away on October 3, 2018 in Altoona. He was born on June 4, 1932 in Portage. He was the son of Aurello “Alex” and Gisella (Martinelli) Tavernini. Reno is preceded in death by his parents, his wife: Elizabeth “Bunny” (Markovich) Tavernini, and an infant sister Mary and his brother Aldo.
He is survived by his loving daughter: Laura Tavernini of Cresson and his son Ronald Tavernini of OH, and his grandchildren: Nathan Albright and wife Brittny of Hollidaysburg and Chelsi Tavernini of CA. He is the brother of Nora wife of Dave Sasek of OH and Nancy wife of Ronald Sherbine of Portage. Reno is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and his very good friend: John Trusik of Benscreek. He is the godfather of Stephen Sherbine and Gregory Twiggs both of Portage.
A 1951 graduate of Portage Area High School. Reno is an Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was retired from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation as a Staff Appraiser. He was also a former real estate broker. Reno was an avid golfer, fisherman and dancer. He was known to many as “Crazy Legs” for his abilities to dance the Jitterbug. Reno also enjoyed playing cards and gambling. He enjoyed morning coffee with his friends at McDonalds. He was a member of the Portage American Legion, Portage VFW, AMVETS, and the Portage Moose. He followed all Portage Area Mustangs sporting events.
Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM on Saturday, October 6th at the Matthew R. Decort Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc. of Portage. Funeral Mass will be held Sunday, October 7th at 1 PM at Holy Family Catholic Church, 509 Caldwell Avenue of Portage, Fr. Thomas Stabile, Celebrant. Committal will be private to the family. Military Rites by the Portage Ritual Team will follow Mass at the Church.
