Obituary for Walter V. Seder
Seder, Walter V. – 89 of Portage, passed away peacefully at home on November 13, 2020 with his loving wife Carmie and his family at his side. He was born on January 17, 1931 in Benscreek, Portage Township. Walt was the youngest son of Andrew and Josephine (Pycz) Seder. He is preceded in death by his parents, his son-in-law, Russell L. Adams and 12 siblings. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family and always proud of his Polish heritage. Walt was a loving father, husband, grandfather and friend to all. He was dearly loved by his wife of 68 years, Carmie (Bellvia) Seder and his children: Mark Seder and wife Kay of TN; David Seder and wife Michelle of Portage; Cathy Adams and companion Brent Conrad of Altoona and Valerie Hampton and Fiancé Bryon Latterner of Portage. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Matthew Seder (Beth), Michael Seder, Amanda Welch (Jacob), Zachary Adams and Fiancée Dina Pacifico, Megan Meehan (Patrick), Molly Seder, Joshua Hampton (Amy), Austin “Zeek” Adams and Fiancée Andi Chestney, Katie Seder and Justin Hampton, and 6 great grandchildren. Their dear Pap will be missed by all. Walt was an Army Veteran of the Korean War. His military time was spent as a MP in Germany. When he returned stateside, he and Carmie settled in Pittsburgh but soon ventured back to their hometown of Portage to start a family and begin his lifelong career as the owner and operator of Seder Vending. With Walt’s hard work and determination, he built a successful business and along the way he met folks who would become lifelong friends. Walt believed in giving back to his community and was active in several local organizations. He generously donated his time, efforts and resources to several causes. Walt was especially proud of his active membership in the GBU. He served as President of the Summerhill GBU #291 for more than fifty years. In 2014 he was presented the Louis F Voltz Award for his life-long dedication and service to the GBU. Every four years he and Carmie enjoyed attending fun and exciting GBU conventions held throughout the country. Walt was also a life member of the Portage Volunteer Fire Company, a member of the Portage American Legion #430, the Portage AMVETS #150, Summerhill Social Club and a member of the former Portage VFW #895. He and Carmie took pleasure in dedicating their time as volunteers to the Portage Area Food Pantry. Additionally, Walt was a passionate sports fan of Penn State Nittany Lion football, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Pirates. For many years Carmie and he were season ticket holders for Penn State and traveled to Beaver Stadium to tailgate and cheer on the Blue and White with friends and family. Walt also treasured the time he spent in the outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He appreciated nature by caring for his lawn, planting flowers and feeding his animal friends. Together with friends he and Carmie cruised to the Caribbean Islands, Alaska and other tropical destinations. They also embarked on numerous bus trips around the county and often made stops at their favorite casinos. Many summers were spent along the east coast where he made sure he graciously provided his children and grandchildren unforgettable beach vacations. His tireless love and devotion to his wife and family will be everlasting. Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM on Thursday, November 19, 2020 at the Matthew R. Decort Funeral Home Inc. in Portage. Due to Covid-19 Funeral Mass will be private to the family and friends at his church, Holy Family Catholic Church. Please practice recommended social distancing guidelines. Masks are mandatory. Committal at Sacred Heart Mausoleum well be held in Portage. Graveside Military Rites by St. Michael Legion.
