When he returned stateside, he and Carmie settled in Pittsburgh but soon ventured back to their hometown of Portage to start a family and begin his lifelong career as the owner and operator of Seder Vending. With Walt’s hard work and determination, he built a successful business and along the way he met folks who would become lifelong friends. Walt believed in giving back to his community and was active in several local organizations. He generously donated his time, efforts and resources to several causes. Walt was especially proud of his active membership in the GBU. He served as President of the Summerhill GBU #291 for more than fifty years. In 2014 he was presented the Louis F Voltz Award for his life-long dedication and service to the GBU. Every four years he and Carmie enjoyed attending fun and exciting GBU conventions held throughout the country. Walt was also a life member of the Portage Volunteer Fire Company, a member of the Portage American Legion #430, the Portage AMVETS #150, Summerhill Social Club and a member of the former Portage VFW #895. He and Carmie took pleasure in dedicating their time as volunteers to the Portage Area Food Pantry. Additionally, Walt was a passionate sports fan of Penn State Nittany Lion football, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Pirates. For many years Carmie and he were season ticket holders for Penn State and traveled to Beaver Stadium to tailgate and cheer on the Blue and White with friends and family. Walt also treasured the time he spent in the outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He appreciated nature by caring for his lawn, planting flowers and feeding his animal friends. Together with friends he and Carmie cruised to the Caribbean Islands, Alaska and other tropical destinations. They also embarked on numerous bus trips around the county and often made stops at their favorite casinos. Many summers were spent along the east coast where he made sure he graciously provided his children and grandchildren unforgettable beach vacations.
