Obituary for Helen M. Talko
Talko, Helen M. - 95 of Lilly, was called home to the Lord on September 20, 2021 from her temporary residence at Maybrook Hills in Altoona after a short-term illness. She was born on April 16, 1926 in Lilly. Helen was the daughter of Paul and Mary (Cooper) Talko. She is preceded in death by her parents and her siblings: John “Jiggs” Talko (Helen Rapsky), Paul “PJ” Talko Jr. (Frances “Florence” Valenta), Elizabeth “Liz” McCOOL (Edward), Joseph “Slim” Talco (Ann Skrbin), Andrew “Sam” Talko, Mary “Bebe” Guastaferri (Mario “Gus”) and Michael “Iker” Talko and her brothers-in-law: Roger Waibel and Francis “Fussy” Simala.
Helen is survived by her siblings: Madaline “Mags” Waibel of Hendersonville, NC, Virginia “Ginny” Simala of Portage, PA and Francis “Whitey” Talko (Joyce Lopit) of Irwin, PA. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Helen was a devout Catholic and was the Godmother to many of her nieces and nephews.
She was born and raised in Lilly and continued to be a long-term resident there for many years. After the death of her mother, at a young age, Helen and her sister Liz helped to raise their younger siblings. Helen enjoyed playing pinochle, bowling, dancing and going to the movies and live theatre performances. She loved the opportunity to dress up and wear her jewelry. She was employed and retired from the Gallitzin Shirt Factory after many years of service.
Family will receive friends on Saturday, September 25, 2021 from 11AM until 12PM at the Matthew R. Decort Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc. in Portage. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, September 25, 2021 at 1PM at Our Lady of the Alleghenies Church in Lilly, with Fr. Matthew Reese and Deacon Samuel Albarano presiding. Committal will be held in St. Brigid Cemetery in Lilly. The Talko Family would like to give a special thank you to the staff at Maybrook Hills for the love and care that they gave to Helen.
