Obituary for George Ray Coughlin
Coughlin, George Ray – 80 of Portage, passed away on December 4, 2017, peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on March 27, 1937 in Johnstown. He was the son of George G. and Emma (Wetmiller) Coughlin. George is preceded in death by his parents, his son Stephen Coughlin and his best canine companion Lager.

He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years: Twila E. (Cessna) Coughlin of Portage. George and Twila were united in marriage on July 11, 1961. He is also survived by his children: Julie Hartline (Duane) of Lilly, Ronald “Joe” Coughlin (Cheri Hoover) of Lebanon and grandchildren: Kiersten Hartline and fiancé Darren Petrunak, Dustin Hartline and Danielle, Ronald and Samuel Coughlin. George is the brother of Thomas “Tucker” Coughlin (Dee); Ronnie “Butch” Coughlin (Jeanie) and Suzanne “Sus” Rice.

George was a graduate of Central Cambria High school. Upon graduation from High school, he entered the United States Air Force and was stationed in France. After returning home from active duty, George became a coal miner. He furthered his education in refrigeration and air conditioning and was lastly employed by Hoss’s, where he practiced this trade. A jack-of-all-trades, George, enjoyed woodworking and he generously gave his time, talent, skills and handmade crafts to friends, family and caregivers. A lover of animals, he enjoyed many pets throughout the years. George was known within the family as the “Animal Whisperer”. An avid traveler and lover of the outdoors, George, enjoyed camping, a good fire and seeing new places. Following his passion for aviation, which inspired his grandson to follow in his footsteps, George and Dustin took their final flight together this past Thanksgiving. Together the two of them would frequent air shows and aviation events. George took his final lift off on December 4th. He always kept one foot in front of the other and lived a life filled with a positive attitude and hard working demeanor. He usually left a witty comment or made a clever joke. He was beloved by family and friends and will be very missed but always remembered. “Yep, that will do.”

Family will receive friends from 4 to 8 PM on Thursday at the Matthew R. Decort Funeral Home Inc. of Portage where a funeral service will be held on Friday at 11 AM, Pastor Arthur Black, officiant. Committal in Lloyd Cemetery in Ebensburg. Graveside military rites by the Portage Ritual Team.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Georges name to 365 Hospice, 119 S. Main Street, Carrolltown, PA 15722, Bethany United Methodist Church, 700 Farren Street, Portage, PA 15946 and/or a family or friend in need during the holiday season.
