Obituary for Julia A. Ferraro
Ferraro, Julia A. - 89 of Portage, PA, passed away on February 14, 2018 at Amber Hills in Ebensburg, PA. A sweetheart of a lady was called home on Valentine’s Day. She was born on August 13, 1928 in Portage. Julie was the daughter of George and Julia (Krabak) Fuchala. She was preceded in death by her parents, son: George R. Ferraro, Jr. her brothers: George, Joseph, Andrew, Edward and John and her sisters: Mary and Margaret and special sister-in-law: Genevieve Ferraro. Mary (2017), Maggie (2015) and Julia (2018), were fondly remembered as “The Gabor Sisters” and they are again reunited. Julie was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She is survived by her husband: George, of 69 years, whom she married on December 18, 1948. Julie is also survived by her daughter Deborah Shope (Daniel) and grandchildren: Benjamin Shope (Elizabeth), Breanna Layo (Deven), Brian Shope and her beloved great grandson: Bode Daniel Layo. Also surviving is her brother-in-law: Louis Ferraro and sisters-in-law: Mary Ferraro and Louise Collins and numerous nieces and nephews.
Julie retired after many years of service at the former K&B Sportswear. During that time, she formed many life-long friendships with the “Girls in the Pressing Department.” She was a kind and loving grandmother, who never missed an activity or sporting event. Julie’s home and kitchen were always open to her grandchildren and friends.
A special thank you to Amber Hills administration and staff and Grane Hospice for their excellent care and compassion during Julie’s time with them. At the request of deceased, there will be no viewing, visitation or service. Interment will be private to the family.
The Ferraro family is being served by the Matthew R. Decort Funeral Home Inc. of Portage. The kindness of memorial gifts may be made in Julie’s name to the Crichton McCormick Park of Portage. Dementia stole our mother and grandmother from us and her memories from her, but we will carry them with us. “She was still here, but yet she was gone.”
